That confidence, unfortunately, can work against you in Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh's climate is not simply "hot." It is a specific and demanding environment that reaches temperatures well above 110°F in summer, drops dramatically at night, and maintains outdoor humidity levels that hover in the single digits for much of the year — only to spike unpredictably during seasonal dust storms and brief rain events. For wood, that combination is genuinely hostile. And it's why the carpenters who build beautiful, lasting interiors in this city think about materials in ways that would puzzle a contractor in, say, Minneapolis or Atlanta.

Why Western Wood Standards Don't Translate

In North America, most residential carpentry is built around a climate that, even at its driest, still carries meaningful ambient moisture. Wood species like Douglas fir, white oak, and American cherry are graded and sold with the assumption that they'll live in environments where indoor humidity is routinely maintained between 30% and 50%. Building codes, joinery tolerances, and finishing techniques all reflect that baseline.

Indoor air conditioning in the city runs aggressively for six or more months of the year, stripping interior air of nearly all moisture. Without a humidification system — which most residential buildings here do not have — indoor humidity can fall below 15%. At those levels, even well-seasoned wood continues to release moisture, shrinking across its grain, opening joints, and developing surface checks that can compromise both aesthetics and structural integrity.

The opposite problem appears when seasonal conditions shift. Brief periods of elevated humidity — or the introduction of moisture through cooking, plumbing, or inadequate sealing around windows — can cause rapidly desiccated wood to absorb moisture unevenly, leading to warping and cupping that can feel sudden and severe.

Dense, hard, and naturally adapted to low-moisture environments, sidr is particularly well-suited for decorative millwork, carved panels, and furniture pieces where dimensional stability matters.

Engineered wood products, including high-density MDF and moisture-resistant plywood cores, have become increasingly common in Riyadh's residential market — not as a budget compromise, but as a deliberate performance choice. When properly sealed and finished, these substrates outperform solid softwoods in terms of stability under thermal stress. Many of the finest custom cabinetry installations in Riyadh's upscale villas use engineered cores with solid wood veneers or hardwood face frames, combining visual warmth with dimensional reliability.

Joinery and Finishing: Where the Real Expertise Lives

Selecting the right species is only the beginning. How wood is joined, finished, and installed makes an equally significant difference in Riyadh's conditions.

North American carpenters often rely on tight-tolerance joinery — mortise and tenon connections, dovetails, and dado joints — that assume relatively stable wood dimensions. In Riyadh, skilled craftsmen frequently build deliberate expansion gaps into their work, particularly in flooring installations and large panel applications. These gaps, invisible when properly designed, give wood the room to move without cracking adjacent surfaces or popping fasteners.

Finishing products are also selected with the climate in mind. Penetrating oil finishes, popular in American woodworking for their natural appearance, can struggle in low-humidity environments where they dry too quickly and fail to cure evenly. Catalyzed lacquers and two-part polyurethane topcoats, which form a harder and more moisture-impermeable surface, are preferred by experienced Riyadh carpenters for their durability under thermal cycling.

Sealing end grain — the cut ends of boards where moisture enters and exits most rapidly — is treated as a non-negotiable step here, rather than an optional refinement.

Working Effectively With Local Carpenters as an Expat Homeowner

For American homeowners in Riyadh, the most productive approach is to treat local craftsmen as the subject-matter experts they are, rather than attempting to replicate what worked back home.

Start by describing your aesthetic goals — the look, the function, the feeling you want in a space — rather than specifying materials by name. A carpenter who has worked in Riyadh for ten or fifteen years will translate those goals into appropriate local material choices automatically. If you arrive with a Pinterest board full of reclaimed barn wood and open-grain oak finishes, a good craftsman will tell you honestly which elements will translate and which will disappoint in this environment.

Ask specifically about the wood's sourcing and seasoning. Properly kiln-dried or air-seasoned stock, acclimated to Riyadh's indoor conditions before installation, performs dramatically better than material installed green or straight from an outdoor storage yard.

Finally, invest in a post-installation maintenance plan. Even the best carpentry work in Riyadh benefits from periodic inspection of joints, touch-up finishing on high-wear surfaces, and humidity monitoring in rooms with significant wood installations. This is standard practice among experienced local craftsmen, and it's the reason their best work lasts for decades in one of the world's most demanding climates.
